RANDOM REMINDER
RELAY RACE
There are cricketers who croon over Wisden during the long winter nights, thousands of Rugby football experts who can tell you who it was who made one appearance for Poverty Bay as a flank forward in 1933, and both are outnumbered by golfers with memories of startling clarity who are prepared to let you into the secret of how it was they just failed to break 90 in the quarter-final of the club junior championship in 1957. But this young man was more devoted to athletics than an alcoholic to the bottle. He was a bachelor, and when friend* called he
would proudly show them the shelves stacked with books on athletics, and open a wardrobe door to display his 40 pain of running shoes. He was a good runner, at that. But, his friends said—after prior consultation—ft had. been proven that an athlete was the better for having an understanding wife to look after him, one who shared his interest in athletics, . but would be there with his slippers warmed for him when he came in from his training run, and so forth. The young man gave thisproject much thought and ultimately acted on the malicious advice of his friends. He met and married a Channing young
lady who did. Indeed, show some enthusiasm for the sport But the plan never quite worked out as he intended. She grew to share his interest in running more and more closely, and actually stepped up her own light and haphazard training programme. Her progress was remarkable. He has not got much further at all. And now, he is at home of nights, doing the dishes and performing similar menial tasks, for she is now at the top of the tree and • has her time fully occupied. Mind you, a day of retribution may be ahead. They do not yet have a family.
