N.Z. OPIUM ADDICT

Gaol Imposed In Sydney (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) SYDNEY, Mar. 30. A New Zealander, alleged to have been a drug addict for 10 years, was one of the few white men who could process opium, a court was told in Sydney. William Thomas Williams, aged 35, a chef, pleaded guilty yesterday to having broken into four chemists’ shops last September and stolen drugs, 72 hypodermic needles, money and other pro-

perty. He was sentenced to six years’ gaol. Detective Sergeant G. F. G. Marshall told Sydney quarter sessions that Williams was one of the few white men in Australia who could process opium.

“He is probably the only one in this country,” he said. Detective Marshall said Williams, a New Zealander, came to Australia in 1964 to break his opium addiction.
