CONCERTO CONTEST
The Christchurch Civic Music Council last evening announced a concerto competition for players under 23 years old of the piano, violin, viola, cello, flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, French horn, or trumpet Entrants will come to Christchurch at their own expense early in December for preliminaries, in which they will play at least one movement of their chosen work with piano accompaniment Six finalists will be brought to Christchurch at the council’s expense early next February to play each concerto with a full orchestra. The winner will play in the Pan-Pacific Arts Festival in Christchurch next March. There will be a first prize of £lOO, second of £75, and third of £5O. The chairman of the council (Mr G. A G. Connal) said last evening that the event should stimulate widespread interest from supporters of a variety of instruments and benefit New Zealand as a whole and Christchurch in particular. The Music Council had prepared a “skeleton programme” for musie in the Arts Festival which will be settled soon, said Mr Connal. Another competition was being considered for New Zealand works' for small choirs in which the winning composition could also be performed at the festival.
