Mrs Julie Cunningham has been selected to compere afternoon television programmes from CHTV 3. No official announcement has yet been made by the New Zealand Broadcasting Corporation, as the selection is subject to appeal within the organisation. Mrs Cunningham is well known to Christchurch viewers and was one of the first announcers on Channel 3. She is one of four women selected throughout New Zealand to run afternoon programmes geared to people at home. Then were 312 applications. Miss P. Gregory, head of women’s television programmes, said recently that women for the half-hour programmes on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays needed to be mature, with a warmth of personality and with bright ideas, and able to infuse enthusiasm—women with whom the housewife could feel a certain kinship. Mrs Cunningham, formerly Miss Julie Turpin, gained her B.A at Canterbury University, and spent two years overseas before joining the N.Z.B.C. She was one of the first announcers to memorise
