Completion Of Transfer
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) BRUSSELS, March 31. The North Atlantic Alliance’s military headquarters, transferred from France at President de Gaulle’s insistence, became operational today at Casteau, about 30 miles from Brussels. General Lyman Lemnitzer, the American Supreme Allied Commander, Europe, will formally accept the new Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (S.H.A.P.E.) from the Belgian authorities at a simple flag-raising ceremony. The move from France involved the movement of more than 35,000 military staff, 70,000 dependents, and more than 800,000 tons of ammunition, arms and supplies. It was carried out in less than six months at an estimated cost of about £l5 million and met the April 1 deadline set by General de Gaulle for S.H.A.P.E. to leave France.
