Battery Car On Show
experimental batteryA powered car announced recently by General Motors, the Electrovair 11, is on show at the New York international motor show. The car, a blue Corvair, is part of a research programme which has now been going for 10 years. The car is powered by a silver-zinc battery pack driving electric motors, and while the batteries are very costly they are much lighter than conventional lead-acid units.
The car has the same performance as a normal internal
combustion engine Corvair, but travels only 40 to 80 miles before recharging is needed. The batteries can be recharged about 100 times before they have to be renewed. General Motors engineers set good performance levels for the car because it was realised a family car should be quick and manoeuverable for safety reasons. Electric cars in the performance range I of electric golf carts would be 1 too dangerous for city driving : unless restricted to special ;slow lanes, the engineers say.
