STUDY OF LATIN
New Emphasis In Britain (Special Crspdt. N.Z.P.A.) LONDON, March 29. A new emphasis on the study of Latin in English schools may emerge from a £34,500 teaching research programme which has been running for almost two years with Nuffield Trust sponsorship at Cambridge. According to the “Guardian,” the project, under Mr David Morton, is being conducted in liaison with schools in which “direct” or “oral” teaching of the language is already well established. One of the schools concerned with the project is the Priory School, Shrewsbury, where the headmaster has written “oral” textbooks. It is there that one of the classics masters has recordd and taught Latin translations of “These Boots Are Made for Walking,” and “Where Have All the Flowers Gone?” and other songs.
