Book Of Mao Quotations Sells Well

“Quotations From Chairman Mao Tse-tung” is a best-seller in Christchurch. One bookseller sold almost his whole quota of 24 books in one day. The 312-page, pocket-size, in a red plastic slip cover, costs 2s 6d. A sepia-toned portrait of Chairman Mao is in the front.

Mr C. V. Walter, of the Co-operative Bookshop, said he had sold his complete stock of 180 copies. Another bookseller said that if the book had been printed in New Zealand it would have cost at least 10s.. It was obvious that it was being subsidised by the Chinese for propaganda.

The book is published by the Foreign Languages Press in Peking. It is printed on good paper, is solidly bound, and has a book-mark of red ribbon. There is no mention of copyright. Among the quotations are;— “We should support whatever the enemy opposes and oppose whatever the enemy supports.” “Every Communist must grasp the truth, Tolitical power grows out of the barrel of a gun.’” “The only way to settle questions of an Ideological nature or controversial issues among the people is by the democratic method, the method of discussion, of criticism, or persuasion, and education, and not by the method of coercion or repression,” “Pay attention to uniting and working with comrades who differ with you. This would be borne in mind [both in the localities and in the army. It also applies to

relations with people outside the party. We have come together from every corner of the country, and should be good at uniting in our work not only with comrades who hold the same views as we but also with those who hold different views.”

“An army without culture is a dull-witted army, and a dull-witted army cannot defeat the enemy.” “Enable every woman who can work to take her place on the labour front, under the principal of equal pay for equal work. This should be done as quickly as possible.” “We can learn what we did not know. We are not only good at destroying the old world, we are also good at building the new.”

“We must never adopt an arrogant attitude of GreatPower Chauvinism and become conceited because of the victory of our revolution and certain achievements in our construction. Every nation, big or small, has its strong and weak points.”
