ANOTHER EDEN
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. In an effort to bring Eden Park’s cricket pitch up to top Internationa] standard, the ground’s board of control is considering sending its chief groundsman, Mr R. Beveridge, to Australia later this year to study preparation of pitches in Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide. The board said today that the establishing of couch grass would be Mr Beveridge’s chief study. This grass, called Indian dhoub, was expected to solve the park’s problem. The Eden Park pitch . came in for strong criticism from the New Zealand captain, B. W. Sinclair, and the chairman of the New Zealand selection panel, Mr M. E. Chapple, who both described it as “the worst pitch encountered in the series.”
