Tauranga Leading Port For Export Cargo
Tauranga led Auckland last year as the port handling the largest volume of cargo shipped overseas from New Zealand. This was a result of the growing use of Tauranga for the export of timber and paper products from the surrounding district. Tauranga handled 680,000 tons of outward overseas cargo compared with 644,000 tons at Auckland, says the Government Statistician (Mr J. V. T. Baker). Of the four main ports, Wellington handled the biggest volume of coastal cargo last year. Wellington handled 1,182,000 tons inward, and 726,000 tons outward. Auckland was next, with 1,125,000 tons inward, and 130,000 tons outward. Then came Lyttelton, with 603,000 tons inward and 299,000 tons outward, followed by
Picton, which handled 417,000 tons inward coastal cargo and 412,000 tons outward. There is no doubt, says the Government Statistician, that the four roll-on roll-off ferries Aramoana, Aranui, Maori and Wahine are boosting the tonnages of coastal cargo passing through Wellington, Picton and Lyttelton.
