TROTTING Addington Success For Light Brigade

The success of the progeny of Light Brigade was a highlight of the two nights and one day of the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s Easter meeting which ended at Addington Raceway last Saturday. They gained five wins and 13 placings and won £5BlO of the £31,750 distributed in stakes and trophies at the meeting.

His progeny dominated the races for trotters at the meeting, Asia Minor winning the final of the New Zealand Trotting Championship as well as a qualifying heat. Break Through won a qualifying heat and the consolidation race. He was prevented from starting in the final because of a technicality.

Glen Dee, Harbour Light, Forward March and Tronso were open class trotters to earn place money, while Winabattle and Regal Scott finished second and fourth respectively in the New Zealand Trotting Stakes. Light Brigade is also the sire of the season’s top two-year-old, Good Chase, which

outclassed his rivals in the New Zealand Welcome Stakes. Unfortunately Good Chase is not engaged in the £2500 New Zealand Sapling Stakes, the winner of which is usually acclaimed as the leading- pacer of his age. This year, no matter what the result of the Ashburton classic, Good Chase will be recognised as the top performer of his age. Fifteen of the progeny of Light Brigade earned stakemoney during the meeting. Flying Song had only seven runners in the money during the meeting, but they gained five wins and four placings worth £3825 in stakes, placing him second on the list. Curragh Dan, with two wins, was his best winner, while Le Chant, Raven Song and Happy Songster all made worthwhile contributions to his total. Garrison Hanover, which has vied for the lead on the sires’ list with Light Brigade in the last few weeks, had 14 runners in the money at the meeting. They gained four wins and 12 placings worth £3687 10s. Garrison Hanover’s younger progeny were the best contributors to his total. The progeny of 32 sires earned money at the meeting. Of these 16 were bred in the United States and 16 in New Zealand. Only seven of the imported sires are still available to breeders in this country. Only four of the New Zealand-bred sires are not still available.
