Mackenzie Highland Show Maintains High Standard

The strength and quality of the exhibits was indicative of the confidence prevalent in New Zealand’s primary industry, said the member of Parliament for Ashburton (Mr R. L. G. Talbot) when he opened the Mackenzie County Agricultural and Pastoral Society’s 69th annual Highland Show at Fairlie on Monday.

The show was held in fine but cloudy weather. Gate takings amounted to £977.

Mr Talbot, who was welcomed by the president (Mr A. L. Dunn), said that New Zealand was experiencing marketing problems, but it was an opportune time for producers to continue to expand and increase production. The grand parade was led by the Mackenzie Highland Pipe Band, with which the Methven Pipe Band was amalgamated. Entries in the light horse section (721) were a record, and the flower classes (116) exceeded the 1963 record by 10. Sheep entries totalled 455 (the second highest on record) but cattle listings at 51 were 36 less than in 1966. Entries in the needlework and crafts section amounted to 396, compared with a record 403. Entries totalled 2813, only 30 fewer than last year’s record. Judges' Comments The judge of the hunters (Mr G. Kelily, of Methven), described Mrs P. Clarkson’s Simba as the most consistent jumper he had seen at any autumn show. The winner of the “take your own line’’ open F.E.I. event, Simba was one of South Canterbury’s outstanding show jumpers, said Mr Kelly. Referring to the hack classes. Mr Kelly said the champion, Nightcaiil, owned by the president of the society (Mr A. L. Dunn), his wife and Miss J. Dunn, was one of the most outstanding horses to appear in recent years. This was another instance of the contribution by members of the Dunn family to the standard of show jumping in the South Island, said Mr Kelly. Mr Dunn entered the champion hack, Nightcall, Miss Dunn rode the champion hunter, Risman, and Mrs Dunn won the best-mannered and paced hack event with Te Huia. The winner of the Royal Agricultural Society’s silver medal, allocated to the class for three Romney ewe lambs in the flock sheep section, was J. R. McConnal. Mr C. F. B. Clarke, of Tlmaru, who judged the wool classes, said the entries at 104 were well up on last year. In spite of the dry season, the wool opened up in good condition, and was up to standard. The outstanding exhibits were in the Merino wool classes, the champion fleece, exhibited by J. R. Todhunter and Sons, being exceptionally good. It was specially noted for its bulky staple, density and style. The top crossbred wools were well bred, and showed quality, length and style.

More attention could have been paid by some exhibitors to the skirting of the show fleeces, said the judge. In the young farmers' classes, there were good entries, and some outstanding wools. The entrants were to be congratulated on the fleece shown, and the manner in which it had been prepared, the judge said. Mr R. Reid (Darfleld), who judged the Border and English Leicesters and Corriedales, said the most notable section was that of the Border Leicesters, in which the champion ram, oneshear, shown by W. A. Black and D. N. Elliot, was outstanding. The reserve champion, exhibited by R. W. Campbell, was well grown. His boldness was extraordinary, and he showed good promise for the future. Mr Reid said.

Mr J. A. P. Cameron, of Ben Ohau, the judge of the strongcombing and poll Merinos, said that considering the dryness of the season, entries were fairly well brought out. The best two-tooth Merino ram, shown by Smith Brothers, of Central Otago, was awarded the F. H. Smith challenge cup. Mr R. P. Steel (Waiau) judged the fine and medium combing entries, which were well up to the standard of sheep judged by him at FairUe several years ago. Exhibitors were advised to pay more attention to the classification of their entries, said Mr Steel. He said the supreme champion ewe also displayed by Smith Brothers was “outstanding." Mr F. W. Jarman (Avonlea Stud, Darfield), who judged the Ryeliand and Southdown classes, said the over-all exhibit of Southdowns was of very high quality, some of the top sheep showing good breeding characteristics, with plenty of length, and being up off the ground. The champion ram, selected from the two-tooth class, had a beautiful head, was narrow in the shoulders with plenty of length and high tail setting, and stood well.

The reserve champion was also a very active sheep, but not quite as long and as dear in the face cover as the champion ram. The champion ewe also was chosen from the two-tooth ewe “I consider this ewe to be the Ideal type of Southdown for breeding purposes," said Mr Jarman. The reserve champion was the winner of the aged class. Also very true to type, she was slower in her movements and thicker in the shoulder, said the judge Commenting on the Ryelands, Mr Jarman said he was most impressed by their presentation, which was a “line up" of very good sheep. The champion ram was a big, bold sheep, with plenty of length, and an outstanding front end. The champion ewe was selected from the younger ewe class, and he considered she had the making of a very good breeding proposition, said the judge. The stud Hereford entries bv Allandale station were well brought out. and typical of their breed, the judge (Mr W. J. McCully, Milford) said. The champion bull was an exceedingly good type of animal. All the studs were true to type and colour. Prime cattle entries were a credit to breeders. Mr McCully said. The Hugh McDonald Challenge Cup for most points in A grade piping events was won by D. Boyle. Leta Herron, of Oamaru, won the Fairlie Citizens’ Trophy for most points in Highland dancing. Results were: SHEEP Flock Sheep (Judges: strong wool, Mr F. Allan, Ashburton; fine wool, Mr J.
