WRECKING MAO PLAN
Poisoning Of Cattle (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright' HONG KONG, March 28. Opponents of Mao Tsetung are poisoning cattle to sabotage his regime, Hong Kong newspapers said today. Mao’s enemies are trying to whip up ferment by wrecking plans to save Kwangtung province in south China from an impending catastrophic drought, they say. There have been previous reports of agricultural and industrial sabotage, but Chinese officials have denied that production had been disrupted or that food shortages would result. Mao Tse-tung's wife, Madame Chiang Ching, has accepted Prime Minister Chou En-lal’s advice of moderation and has expressed—in his presence—strong displeasure over Red Guard “beating, smashing and looting.” Once a strong advocate of force, Madame Chiang had encouraged the young Red Guards to parade party veterans through the streets of Peking in dunces’ caps, and otherwise humiliate those who opposed her husband.
