Post Office Busy
Christchurch postmen were busier than usual yesterday handling the mail which had accumulated over the Easter holidays. With no delivery on Saturday, they had to sort and deliver mail which had been posted as far back as last Wednesday. Most postmen were late in getting away with loads more in keeping with Christmas. The Deputy-Chief Postmaster (Mr M. Johnston) said the situation would be back to normal today. Other branches of the Post Office were busy over the holiday. Most of the telegrams related to the big number of Easter weddings. Cloudy Day Temperatures were mild in Christchurch yesterday and the sky was cloudy most of the day. The maximum temperature recorded at the weather office at Harewood was 61 degrees at 3 p.m., and the maximum at the Botanic Gardens was 62 degrees, also recorded at 3 p.m. At 6 a.m. at Harewood the temperature was 54 degrees, and by 9 a.m. had risen only one degree. At noon, the temperature was 60 degrees, and at 4 p.m. its was again 60 degrees. Rooks Leave Rooks that had been damaging crops in the West Melton area had flown off of their own accord, said the livestock instructor of the Department of Agriculture (Mr A. Diack) yesterday. He had no idea where the rooks had gone. “They don’t usually go far—a mile or so,” he said. Before they moved off, the rooks had been eating self-sown oats. Ambulance Camp A St. John Ambulance Brigade cadet camp was held at the peramnent site at Waddington from Thursday until yesterday. The object of the camp was to train existing officers and non-commissioned officers in ambulance and nursing work. The camp commandant was Mr W. G. Whitman.
