INCREASE IN SMOKING
£lom. Spent Last Year The public of New Zealand smoked 4390 million cigarettes, and more than 3} million pounds of tobacco in the year to June, 1966. Production of cigarettes and tobacco was valued at £lO,054,000. The consumption of cigarettes and tobacco in New Zealand rose to 5.251 b a head in the year, says the Government Statistician. Consumption in the previous year was 51b a head. Although the production of cigarettes rose to 4390 million in the year to June, 1966, the output of pipe tobacco and “roll your own” cigarette tobacco dropped from 4,084,0001 b in 1964-65 to 3,653,000 lb in 1965-66. Two years earlier, in 196364, production had amounted to 4,633,0001 b. More than 13} million pounds of tobacco leaf was used in the production of cigarettes and tobacco in New Zealand in 196546. Of this, 51 per cent was New Zealand grown.
