LONG LOAD TRUCK
Use For Steel And Poles A truck specially designed for carrying long loads, contained within the over-all length of the vehicle, has been built up in Christchurch on a Ford chassis. The truck sales manager of Hutchinson Motors, Ltd. (Mr K, W. Cowie) said that the truck was a steel transporter. It was suitable, he said, for carrying long lengths of reinforcing steel, steel girders, pipes, telegraph poles, timber or other long loads. The retail price of the truck was about £4OOO. The truck would carry loads of up to eight tons. The unit was about 30ft over-all. The first of three of the trucks was delivered to John Brightling, Ltd., on Thursday, primarily for the carting of steel.
Production of -the special truck in Christchurch had been a joint effort by several local firms, said Mr Cowie. Hutchinson Motors had designed the unit with a centrally mounted cab. The cab was built by some local fibreglass manufacturers and the bodywork was also made locally. Instead of there being a three-man cab on the truck it had been reduced to a oneman cab, but retaining the same basic cab shape. The centrally-mounted oneman cab allowed for long lengths of steel, or other materials to be run down either side of the cab. Mr Cowie said the unit had a full-tilting cab for servicing. Mr Cowie said he thought a big potential existed for this type of vehicle in New Zealand. He thought it would appeal to steel cartage contractors and to power boards.
