TO PLAY IN AUST.
Three Canterbury women have been picked for the New Zealand women’s basketball team to play in the world tournament at Perth in August. They are J. Blair, A. Boelee, and J. Harnett Other members of the team are M. Gardiner, E. Rowley (Southland), B. Irwin, M. Solomon, T. Vercoe (Rotorua), P. Hamilton (Auckland), and S. James (Northland). The team was picked after trials on Saturday and yesterday, and a Probables v. Possibles match yesterday afternoon.
J. Harnett, who in the early stages of the trials was not up
to form, well justified her selection with some brilliant shooting yesterday. Two somewhat surprising omissions were N. Carnie (Wellington) and C. Palmer (Rotorua). In the first day’s trials, Carnie was the only goal shoot playing an accurate game. However, her form deteriorated yesterday. C. Palmer was perhaps the most flamboyant player in the trials. Her passes were quick and accurate, and her style was extremely striking. The fact that she was essentially an individual player may have lost her a place in a team which will depend a great deal on combination. The team will leave Christchurch for Australia on July 27, 10 days after assembling for practice. It will play games in Sydney, Melbourne, Hobart and Adelaide before the world tournament games which start in Perth on August 13.
