AUCKLAND CHESS
R. Cardoso Wins (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. The Philippines chess champion, R. Cardoso, won the Auckland chess centre open championship tonight, in spite of drawing the final round with O. Sarapu. R. Court, who defeated Sarapu on Saturday, suffered a surprise defeat to R. Waay man. The blind player, T. Free, was successful in the final two rounds giving him four wins and three losses. The New Zealand women’s championships, which were run in conjunction with the tournament, was won by Miss M. McGrath. Result* of the seventh and final round were:—R. Cardos* 64 points, 0.
