A-Bomb Capability Claimed By India

(N.Z. Preet Association—Copyright)

NEW DELHI, March 27.

India was now able to produce an atomic bomb, the Foreign Minister, Mr Chagha, told Parliament today.

But he said Indian nuclear knowledge would be used for “peaceful purposes only.” “We have the nuclear capability. We have decided to utilise our nuclear capability for peaceful purposes only,” he said.

But, under questioning, he

said India would consider her own security “of paramount importance” in considering whether to sign any treaty blocking the spread of nuclear weapons. The Foreign Minister made the comment when asked by a member of Parliament if it would be safe for India not to produce a nuclear bomb while its “enemy,” China, was moving toward becoming a nuclear power. China is the only Asian country now known to be developing nuclear arms.
