Ferry Road Roundabout
Sir, —I appreciate beauty and think that this roundabout has been turned into a most attractive spot—except that, as one approaches from the Sumner side, there is a tree, sign posts and now the shrubs blocking the view. Before the tree and shrubs grew as tall as they are now it was possible to get a good view down Ferry road of any traffic that might be approaching. Now, after slowing or stopping at the “give way” sign, one almost invariably encounters traffic coming round the roundabout that one has been unable to see: motorcycles, scooters and small cars. A vehicle coming from the Sumner side can be half way on to the roundabout before encountering the oncoming vehicle. Can anything be done before there is an accident there?—Yours, etc., REGULAR USER. March 6, 1967.
[The traffic superintendent for the Christchurch City Council (Mr J. F. Thomas) replies: “The area referred to has been inspected and it was found the direction signs did, to a small degree, slightly obstruct vision. These have now been placed in another position. Regarding the height of the shrubs, they do not obscure vision at present and the reserves department has undertaken to see that they are trimmed to such a height that vision does not become affected.”]
