16 Records Fall In Final Of Swimming Series

Sixteen records, nine of them in rela y events, were broken at the final sessions of the Wharenui Junior Olympics at th e Coronation Pool on Saturday.

In some races more than one team bettered the previous mark. These results, and the standard achieved by the minor placegetters in individual events, confirmed that the future of Canterbury swimming will not rest with two or three gifted performers alone.

The programme for the Olympics—the last carnival of the season—provided four relay races in each of the three age groups. Almost every one produced an exciting duel and in some cases three, and sometimes four teams held chances of victory in a gripping last length.

Perhaps the best was the under-14 girls’ four-length medley relay, the showcase of a section in which Canterbury is particularly strong. B. Everett (Sockburn Park) a .little-known swimmer, almost caught the last Wharenui competitor, while both were being overhauled by Maureen Darch (Spreydon). Wharenui won an exciting victory narrowly, and all three teams were inside the required time. Miss Darch was one of the outstanding individuals of the final session, winning both under-14 freestyle finals in record times. Shona Hallam (Sockburn Park) also won two titles in the section and Christina Tyson (Christchurch Ladles) and Neroli Smith (Cheviot) were prominent in several strokes. Michelle Richardson and Betty Braithwaite, two Wharenui girls who represented Canterbury at the national championships, were outstanding in the under-15 girls’ section. Among the under-13’s, Jocelyn Hay (Elmwood) gained two titles and two records in virtual solo efforts, and Catherine Whiting (Wharenui), who was limited to breaststroke because of her successes in the Canterbury championships, won the only title open to her in good time. The country swimmers continued to do well; on Saturday Richard Faulding (Rangiora, under-13) and David Elliott (Ashburton, under-14) each won two titles—the maximum al-

lowed under junior Olympics rules. The Elmwood pair, John Tillson snd Geoffrey Walker, won four titles between them in the under-15 boys’ section, and Graeme Barnett (Spreydon) looked the best of the freestyle sprinters. Stephen Johnston (Jellie Park) continued hie good progress in the under-14 class. Abbreviations used in the results are:— W., Wharenui; S.P.. Sockburn Park; C.L. Christchurch Ladies; J.P., Jellie Park; Ash., Ashburton; E., Elmwood; S., Spreydon; 8., Beckenham; St. A., St. Albans; R., Rangiora; Chev., Cheviot.
