Easy For Aquarelle

Aquarelle, the sixth favourite in a field of 11, brilliantly won the Wakefield Challenge Stakes, the Wellington Racing Club’s richest two-year-old race, at Trentham on Saturday.

Aquarelle has done all her racing so far at Trentham and four starts have produced two wins and two thirds, but she will have her next race at Ellerslie in the Wills Championship Stakes. Aquarelle, a half-sister by Faux, Tirage to Aqua Pura, winner of the Stratford Cup and several other races, belongs to the same family as Rising Fast, Ballochmyle, and many other big winners. Blue Pool, the dam of Aquarelle, was a winner, but she did not have a suitable temperament for racing.

Blue Pool, like her brilliant daughter Aquarelle, is owned by Mr J. N. Mooney, a farmer from Bell Block in Taranaki. Aquarelle was one of the tail-end group when the field left the stalls, but she won running away by two lengths and a half from Chapel Belle, and sped over the seven furlongs in Imin 24sec. Ma Jeune and Ina Court also missed the start and they did not manage to rally in a fast-run race. Patrida, the second favourite, was in front for a few strides early, but R. J. Skelton found a trailing run for him when High Delight sped forward just ahead of Chapel Belle.

High Delight caused a stir when she hung badly and drifted wide on the course on the home turn, leaving Chapel Belle in front Patrida could not get to Chapel Belle, but Aquarelle

finished brilliantly wider on the track, and pulled away quickly to win hands down. Chapel Belle lasted well enough to beat Patrida by half a length for second. They were clear of High Delight, Ima Martian, and the disappointing favourite, Le Danois. On-Course Double

Holders of 408 5s tickets on the Rand-Aquarelle combination at Trentham received an on-course dividend of £66 7s for £l. Holders of 521 tickets on Chapel Belle, the runner-up to Aquarelle in the Wakefield Challenge Stakes, received £22 5s for £l.
