RECORD TAKINGS AT HAWARDEN SHOW

Temperatures In 90s

The Hawarden Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s sixtieth show was held in perfect weather on Saturday. The gate takings were a record £l3O, compared with the previous highest of fi24 last year.

Temperatures were in the 90s, there was not a cloud in the sky and only the lightest breeze. Suppliers of liquid refreshment had little left at the end of the day.

Sheep entries were a record 611 and formed the biggest section of the show. Entries in the wool section were well up on last year and there were big increases in house and dairy, school work, and art sections.

Several persons at the show on Saturday had attended the first show in 1907. One is Mrs A. G. Black, of Culverden, who entered a harness pony and drove it in the grand parade. One of the outstanding features of the show, for which credit must be given to the Hawarden-Waikari Young Farmers’ Club, was a vintage machinery display. Old tractors and machinery of all kinds had been obtained from many parts of Canterbury, although a great deal of it was found in the district

A threshing mill 60 or 70 years old, driven by a traction engine, was demonstrated. A full team, including dray drivers, would have consisted of 11 men to do the work which today can be done by one man using a self-propelled bulk harvester. Mr G. Holmes, the judge ot the F.E.I. events, said that the standard of jumping was very high. He said he would have preferred to see a few more horses competing in the A grade competition and regretted that time pushed horses and riders Into a rushed event. The hack class was outstanding and so even that judging was difficult, said the judge, Mr G. R. Bedford. There were one or two very good cobs including Mrs L. Bush's Prince Robin. In the hunting class jumping was good and he was pleased to see that horses were kept to a wellcontrolled pace, said Mr Bed. (ord.

The standard of ponies was very good, said the Group A judge (Mr W. H. Archdale), although in the smaller pony classes ring manners could have been improved. The jump. Ing was excellent—it was hard to distinguish the top ponies in both sections, he said.

Competition tn the flock sheep section was of very high standard, said the judge (Mr C. Burrows), although some breeders had trouble with tail setting. The pen of five sheep was an outstanding section and Y.F.C. classes were well supported. Entries in the wool section were large and the standard was very good, said the judge (Mr K. M. Collins). The entry was about twice as many as usual. An outstanding fleece was a Merino exhibited by R. P. Steele, of Waiau, which would have held a place in any company. The judge of the open Corriedale rams (Mr D. G. A. Casselis) said both age and one. shear rams were of the good quality expected from the district.

The judge of the Aberdeen Angus (Mr J. R. Fraser) said it was pleasing to see top animates of the breed on exhibition on the first occasion that the breed was included at the show. The champion bull showed aH the qualities of a stud sire, he said, and It was interesting to note that aH three buUe exhibited in that class were by the same sire and of the correct type. Mr J. G. Murray, the judge of the Hereford class, said that he was very impressed by the strong female section. The champion buU was a good fleshy animal. He said it seemed Hawarden was growing into a strong Hereford area.
