53rd SHOW AT METHVEN

Entries Praised By Judges

The Methven Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s fifty-third show on Saturday was one of the most successful in the district. Good entries and keen competition drew the praise of judges in many sections.

The show has always been held in high regard by exhibitors and the public and this year’s show undoubtedly confirmed this reputation.

The high temperature and cloudless sky could have belonged to a summer day, and was in marked contrast to the wet miserable conditions at the Mayfield show the previous week. Declaring the show open, Mr R. G. Gerard, a former Cabinet Minister and member of Parliament for the district, who is patron of the Methven A. and P. Association, said the show was up to the highest standard the district had seen. It was a fine example to any show. Patrons enjoyed a varied and interesting ring programme which included, in addition to the popular horse events, wood-chopping competitions, a demonstration by marching girls, steer riding, dog trials and a polo match between Ashburton and Ashley. , , The president of the association (Mr S. Callaghan) said the association was particularly grateful to the Winchmore Irrigation Research Station for its entry of 18-month steers penned at the show. The steers had been subjected to different systems of wintering and to different rates of stocking during the spring and summer. The cattle will be killed and sample carcases cut for exhibition at the field day on Wednesday at the Islington works of the New Zealand Refrigerating Company. Mr S. D. Walker, of the stations staff, will discuss details of management, feeding, liveweight gains and carcase weight during the field day. Mr Callaghan said the association was also grateful to Thomas Borthwick and Sons for sponsoring the new award for porkers to be judged on the hooks on Wednesday in conjunction with the chiller beef competition. He said he was very grateful to competitors, judges and members of the public who had supported the show so well, and to all the organisations which had provided entertainment and services on the ground. Attractions and entertainment were very necessary for the success of any show. JUDGING Mr J. B. Hickman, of Waimate. judge of the Aberdeen Angus classes, said the small entries in the bull classer. were a little disappointing. There was only one mature bull against calves. The answer would be to have mature bull and calf classes in future shows. , „ He said the champion bull, G A. and G. D. Rountree’s Edwin Era of Gladbrook, was a good even animal. The heifer classes had a large entry and the standard was quite high. “It is very pleasing to see such good entries of beef now that we require a lot of beef production in this country and diversification of farming to meet it," he said. Mr W. H. Brown, of Scargill, judge of the beef Shorthorns, said the quality of entries was satisfactory, but it was a pity there were not more.

“It is pleasing to see beef cattle coming into their own, am I am sure we will see more of them in future years,” Mr Brown said. A new class in the show, a pair of unled bulls, was judged by Mr S. W. Allender. of Christchurch. He said the section was an excellent idea but judging was difficult when comparing breed with breed. He said the Aberdeen Angus pair exhibited by M. V. Poff was undoubtedly the best matched. He would like to see more entries in future, but pairs should be better matched. Cattle judges commented very favourably on the judging conditions at the show, particularly on the new loading facilities. In the Corriedale sheep section the judge (Mr R. Robinson, Darfleld) said competition was very good and the first in all classes would stand un to competition anywhere. The wool was good on the top ewes and particularly good on the rams. Mr W. A. Buchan, of Winchmore, judge of the Romney rams, said there was a good number of entries and the standard was up to the best of any local show, with keen competition. The champion ram was one of the best in its class. The iduee of the Romney ewes (Mr T. H. Esler) said the number of entries was good, with the top sheen well up to local standard. The champion ewe was a particularly fine specimen for length and stance. Although not quite up to the standard of the champion, the reserve champion was also a go«d sb»ep in style. Mr W. T. Hamilton, of Geraldine, fudge of the pigs, said that although entries were npt large competition was of a hfvh standard. The judge of the Olymnic jumps (Mr G. D. Kelly, Methven) said the iumnlng was of a verv high standard, the best seen in Methven. In one Hass 12 riders had to lump off to decide the olacinas. Entries for the show, at 3922. Were 317 down on last year. Gate taking* at £3*2, were down rs 3 on ’sat vear’s. Tn the main sections, entries were similar to last vear’s, hut there was a substantial decline tn snnnort for the school or tuvenile classes and home industries.
