Man Dies, 7 Injured In Wanganui Accident

WANGANUI, March 19.

A young man died and seven other persons, including five children, were injured in an accident in Wanganui early tonight. The dead man’s name will not be released until his next-of-kin in England have been notified.

Mr Peter Dean Rosvall, of 29 Roberts avenue, Wanganui, has possible fractured ribs and shock. His condition is “reasonable.”

Michelle, aged seven, and Kay Andrea, aged five, who are j suffering from shock, lacerations and concussion, are being kept in hospital for observation. Mr lan Kevin Hair, aged 18, of the Wanganui fire station, is being treated for lacerations, a fractured thigh, and two fractured wrists. His condition is fair. The children and their parents were travelling in a car which was involved in a collision with a motor-cycle ridden by Mr Hair with the dead

man as pillion passenger, at the intersection of Campbell and Glasgow streets, at 5.50 p.m.

The car rolled on to its side and the children were thrown

out onto the roadway. Mr Rosvall, who was th? driver of the car, and his wife were not thrown out of the car.

Nearby residents rushed to assist the injured children who were lying unconscious on the road.

Some provided blankets and used their cars to assist the two ambulances to take the injured to the hospital. Mrs Helen Alice May Rosvall and her youngest child.

Susan Raewyn, were not admitted to hospital, although the girl suffered a slight cut on the lip. It was nearly an hour before the intersection was opened to traffic again. The motor-cycle was wrecked and the car severely dented at the rear and sides. Two men died when their car left the road and collided with a bridge about 200 yards south of Warea road, about 20 miles from New Plymouth, at 2.30 a.m. today.

The dead men were John Henry Chard, aged 24, of Main road, Rahotu, and Donald Neilson, aged 25> Pungarehu.

, A third man in the car, Bill i Nathan, of Manahi road, Rahotu, was injured in the crash. He is in the New Plymouth Hospital where his condition is reported as being satisfactory. The car was extensively damaged. Body Recovered The body of a Waiouru man, who had been missing for two days, was recovered from a stream near the Desert road yesterday morning. He was Ronald Hunter Greenfield, aged 29, single, assistant secretary for the Y.M.C.A. at Waiouru military camp. He had been at Waiouru for the last 15 months and left early on Wednesday morning to hike along the Waihohonui track. The track

leaves the Desert road 19 miles south of Turangi, crosses the saddle between Mount Ruapehu and Mount Ngauruhoe and continues on to the Chateau. Mr Greenfield took a camera with him and intended spending Wednesday afternoon taking photographs of Mount Ruapehu.

Girl Dies A girl who was admitted to Waikari Hospital on March 12 after being run over by a Land Rover at Palmerston, died yesterday. She was Andrea Robyn Gibbs, aged eight, the daughter of Mr and Mrs R. Gibbs, Bushey Park, Palmerston. Car Overturned A motorist was killed when his car overturned on the Ararua road, near Whangarei, about 7.30 last night. He was Quenton Athol Robinson, single, aged 20, farmhand, of Ararua. Killed Instantly A 17-year-old motor cyclist was killed instantly in a collision with a car on the Meeanee road, near Napier, about midnight last night. He was Dennis McDonald, of 19 Pembroke street, Taradale. A youth driving the car, Mark Franklin Tong, of Meeanee road, was unhurt.
