SHARK SCARE
A National Airways Corporation Flying Club plane spotted three sharks 30 yards from the shore near New Brighton beach yesterday at 2.30 p.m.
A report was radioed to the control tower at Harewood airport and the police were notified. A police car arrived at the New Brighton Surf Club and the shark warning was sounded. More than 100 bathers were in the water at the time and they immediately left the water. The New Brighton surf
club got in touch with other surf clubs and other beaches were cleared. Surf boats from the Walmairi and New Brighton surf clubs went out to try to find the sharks but found nothing. Mr K. Chamberlain, of the New Brighton Surf Club, said the closing day events which were to be held in the afternoon were cancelled “to avoid any risks.” Few surfers went back into the water after the scare, and those who did stayed very close to the water’s edge.
