Developing The Chathams
Sir,—Your leading article on the Chathams today was a little unfair to 150 isolated farmers who have never asked or expected any Government to “invest millions of pounds” in their islands. There is only one thing hampering progress on the Chathams and that is access to the mainland. Is there any incentive for working harder when one has to pay 21s to ship a sheep to the Addington sales or £l2 for a steer, or pay over £l2 a ton for general cargo? The islands are not in the mid-Pacific but, on today’s standards, are just off our shores. Modem air freighters could cover this gap of 500 miles in less than two hours at a fraction of the cost of the present almost non-existent shipping service. The Chatham Islanders are not a race apart; they are New Zealanders who pay New Zealand taxes and who, quite rightly, expect something from New Zealand in return. —Yours, etc., L. R. BLOXHAM.
