Tourist Progress

The announcement of the Government’s intention to build at once a 42-unit motel at Mount Cook is a welcome sign that it does not intend the present financial stringency to interfere unduly with the plans of the Tourist Hotel Corporation to develop the tourist industry vigorously. At a time when the markets for our traditional earners of overseas funds are all more or less under a cloud the tourist industry may well offer the best and most assured return from the capital available for investment. Mount Cook will undoubtedly become one of the centres round which tourist activities in New Zealand will revolve. At present, unfortunately, its lack of adequate accommodation makes it a bottleneck. The substantial additions, catering for various grades of accommodation, will benefit not only Mount Cook but all other tourist centres in the South Island. It will simplify the planning of tours and enable a greater number of New Zealanders as well as overseas visitors to enjoy the scenic and recreational attractions of the South Island.
