The Queen Mother
Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother. . By Dorothy Laird. Hodder and Stoughton. 347 pp. Index. Illustrated. The Queen Mother’s many admirers will find this first authorised biography a delightful book. As a result of interviews with the Queen Mother herself and with many of those personally acquainted with her, the book is rich in examples of her intuitive understanding of people from all walks of life. It also tells of her constant support to the throne during four reigns. There are descriptions of the Queen Mother’s many journeys to the Commonwealth countries (she was the first member of the Royal Family to fly round the world), including her visits to New Zealand in 1927 and 1958, and of her wide interests as a racehorse owner and breeder, angler, collector of Chelsea china and—not least of *ll—as a grandmother.
