Scoured Wool In Better Demand

(N.Z. Press Association —Copyright) LONDON, March 16. The market at the London March wool sales today was better than expected for scoured wool and scoured Merino rose 5 per cent compared with prices at the February sales, says the official report.

Greasy crossbreds met limited trade inquiry and some 60 per cent of the offering was bought by the Wool Commission. Greasy halfbreds were fully 2i per cent lower.

Scoured crossbreds over-all were generally firm, bulky fleece wools moving against the buyer, skirtings and short wools moving a little in buyers’ favour. Scoured halfbreds, however, failed to reach the extreme prices paid in the February sales and were fully 5 per cent lower. While slipe early first lambs eased 2J per cent, second lambs hardened 2i per cent. Offering Nine thousand bales of New Zealand wool was included in the offering, comprising 5100 greasy, 2300 scoured and 1600 slipes. Apart from a few South Island Merino and halfbred clips, the greasy offering consisted almost entirely of medium crossbreds, the bulk of which were drawn from the Auckland area. The selection as a whole was very average, comprising a big percentage of poor style, discoloured wools of indifferent length. Less Attractive The scoureds also were much less attractive than in the last sales here in February and most of the crossbreds were early shorn and short stapled types with only a small proportion of bulky wools. South Island fine wools were in modest supply. A few lots could be put in the category of good style, but the majority were average to good average.
