N.Z. MISSION WARNING
Sharp Reaction In Australia (N.Z. Press Assn—Copyright) MELBOURNE, March 16. Threats that New Zealand could become prejudiced against buying Australian goods because of resentment over the growing trade gap between the two countries have produced a sharp reaction in Melbourne. Remarks made yesterday by Mr H. W. B. Patterson, leader of the New Zealand trade mission in Australia, have been featured in the local press under such headlines as “Buy New Zealand Goods .. . Or Else”.
Australian business leaders and Government officials will not comment publicly on Mr Patterson's warning, but it has been sourly received. A Melbourne department store buyer said today: “It’s no good New Zealand trying to blackmail us. We’ll do business with you on the right terms, but we won’t be pressured into it by threats”. A Federal Government officer said “Stand-over tactics won’t get you anywhere”.
