Pharasal Impressive

Pharasal impressed in his final trial at Riccarton yesterday for tomorrow’s Hutt Handicap at Trentham. He was one of the failures on a heavy track in the Thompson Handicap on the first day of the Wellington meeting but he will be by no means the least of the chances in the £2OOO mile at Trentham If he gets firm footing. By arrangement, Pharasal (A. J. Stokes) and Hushaway (B. Collins) galloped 36ft out on the course proper. Their Imin 18 2-ssec for six furlongs and 50sec for the final four were smart times so wide out.

Much of yesterday’s work was done on the trial grass, but many horses were on the outside of the course proper In special trials from the starting gates at the five furlongs. Manana (Stokes) gave more evidence of pleasing progress for Easter racing in winning the third heat. He won by three parts of a length from Tsunami (G. Gullery), Allegretto (M. King), and Retinue (G. W. Mein). The first heat was won easily by Rival, which made most of the running with the lightweight, A. H. Eastwood, up. Rival finished four lengths clear of the two-year-old, Never Again (R. Moir). Cosmetic (D. J. Thistoll) did well to finish third under a good weight. Fit Youngster

Billy Joe (F. H. Skelton) showed he was a fit twp-year-old for Ashburton on Monday in the second heat. He was going well alongside Conway Stewart (J. Kerkvliet). clear of Overnight (Reuben) at the end. Overnight is an unraced Knight’s Romance—Hand Over filly in M. J. Wadiley’s team. P. H. Jones’s pair, Royal Encounter (Gullery) and Anasiwa

(King), finished on terms clear of the others in the fourth heat. Anasiwa had to be ridden out to go with Royal Encounter in the last furlong. Cumberland (B. S. Finlayson) was third and Takatua (Reuben) fourth. Jones has Anasiwa and Royal Encounter engaged at Ashburton. Running Scared, winner of his last two races, is in the Champion Hack Handicap at Trentham tomorrow, and this four-year-old shaped well in his trial before being taken north yesterday. Ridden by M. King, he ran nine furlongs on the trial grass in imin 59 3-ssec, the last halfmile strongly in 48. Fast Mile Seminole advanced in favour for the Caltex Gold Cup at Ashburton when she ran a fast mile with General Gilbert (J. Kerkvliet) and Warm Up (R. B. Taggart) on the trial grass. They recorded Imin 42sec for the distance and 49 l-ssec for the last half-mile. Seminole was ridden by her race rider, A. J. Stokes. Kalimera (F. H. Skelton) led Danny Kaye (Stokes) by half a length running half a mile in 48 3-ssec. Kalimera shaped so well that her run could have a bearing on favouritism for the Coldstream Handicap, second leg of the T.A.B. double at Ashburton. Other gallops: Plough Seven furlongs.—Gingerbread, imin 31 3-ssec, last four, 49 2-5 sec: Sirtax and Submerge, Imin 32 2-ssec, last three, 40sec; Millie Small and Early Dawn, Imin 29sec, last three in 39sec.
