YOUNG ANGLER DROWNED
A Timaru youth was drowned near the mouth of the Opihi river while fishing for salmon yesterday morning, the Press Association reported.
He was lan Thomas Dickeson, aged 18, a machinist, of Dee street, Timaru. There were about 60 other anglers in the area. About 8.30 a.m. Mr Dickeson was standing on a low shingle bank between the mouth and the open sea when he was struck by a large wave and flung into the swift current. One fisherman made unsuccessful attempts to reach him with a rod. Mr Dickeson’s body was washed up on the beach about 90 minutes later and was recovered by the Timaru police. Fell From Bicycle A four-year-old girl who fell from a bicycle at her home on Monday died in the Whakatane Hospital on Wednesday morning. She was Sandra Therese Hunter, daughter of Mr and Mrs R. Hunter, of Edgecumbe. Fatally Hurt A four-year-old girl died in the Whakatane Hospital today from injuries suffered when she was pinned beneath a “jungle gym” at the Kawerau play centre. She was Deborah Jane Leach, daughter of Mr and Mrs P. C. Leach, of Kawerau. The girl was playing with a number of children on the “jungle gym” at the Ruatahi Maori Hall when the equipment collapsed. She was pinned across the chest by an iron bar.
Driver Died A man seriously injured when a road roller plunged
over a bank at Whatatutu on Tuesday afternoon died early yesterday morning in the Cook Hospital, Gisborne. He was Albert Greenland, aged 48. married, of Rotorua. Left Road A passenger died soon after a four-wheel drive vehicle left the road at Snake Hill, 17 miles from Murupara, at 1.30 p.m. yesterday. He was Mr Paru Nuku, a Kaingaroa logging company employee from Murupara residing at Waiohau. The driver, Mr Rangi Kaipara, escaped with minor injuries.
