Brighton, City Floodlit Soccer Finalists
Christchurch City and New Brighton outplayed their semifinal opponents. Rangers and Technical, respectively, to reach the final of the floodlit soccer competition at Rangers Park last evening. City scored seven times in the second half to beat the host club. Rangers. 9-0, and Brighton, in the main game, defeated Technical, 3-0. The winners will meet in the
final at Rangers Park next Med nesday, when Rangers and Technical will also play for third place. For all but the last 20 minutes Brighton look too good and played too well for Technical to spring a surprise victory. Technical defence, constructed around J. Chalmers. A Hawthorn and G. Griffiths, restricted the young, talented and enthusiastic Brighton team to one goal in the first half but could not prevent this lead being increased to 30 within 17 minutes of the second period A beautifully-controlled lob shot from the wing by its professional player-coach, K France put Brighton ahead after 16 minutes, and G. Spiers and A. Caine added the second half goals. The Brighton inside-forward trio of Caine, Spiers and K Morgans wore down the Technical defence, with their speed constant switching of positions and aggression. Technical struck back hard in the last 20 minutes. A. Dawe hitting the bar and a post, and bringing from D. Phillips, the Brighton goal-keeper, a fingertip save. But it was a despairing effort, for Brighton was undoubtedly the better team City’s streamlined play gave Rangers’ 17-year-old goalkeeper. G. CheUew. a nightmare of a first senior match, particularly in the second half. But CheUew was not to blame for the goals that beat him; he was overwhelmed.
Rangers had their fleeting moments in the first half but they were gnat bites in comparison to City’s steamroller attacks. R. Taylor (two), R. Bruce (two), M. Clements (two). J. Logue (two) and A. Gowans scored City's goals. U.K. SOCCER (A'.Z.P. A.-Reuter— Copyright > LONDON.
