RUBBER DISPUTE

Men Resume Work

Rubber workers at the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company returned to work yesterday after striking last Tuesday. A spokesman for the company said that the men had gone back to work and the situation had returned to normal. The men struck in protest against the dismissal of 11 men who, according to the company had become redundant because of a “go-slow” policy adopted by the rest of the men. The spokesman said the company had retained the 11 men as long as possible, giving them such jobs as painting the buildings. He said that they would be re-engaged as soon as the others returned to their normal production rate. Rubber workers in Canterbury are working to award rates at the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company, and the Dunlop and Empire Rubber mills. They are protesting against being paid less than men employed at rubber mills in Wellington. . Last October a new award gave Wellington men working in carbon black departments more pay than Canterbury men.

Normal production rates aided by bonus incentives are usually 40 to 50 per cent higher than award wages.
