Victory School To Join St. Margaret’s

St. Margaret’s College will take over the Victory Memorial School and eventually use it as the primary department of the college. This year the junior school will not be disturbed but from next year a gradual transition will be made.

This was announced yesterday by the Bishop of Christchurch (the Rt. Rev. W. A. Pyatt) as Warden of St. Margaret’s College. “For some years the Church of England has maintained a church primary day school,' Victory Memorial School, in Springfield road,” he said. “Last year the Victory Memorial School Board found it impossible to continue, and it was realised that if the school was to be maintained on that site it would need to be associated with one of the larger diocesan schools. “With this end in view, the buildings were offered to the St. Margaret’s College board of governors for its use. St. Margaret’s College and Victory Memorial School are very close to each other geographically.

1 “At a meeting of the St. Margaret’s College Trust Board this week it was decided that:

“The best plan in the educational interests of the college is to establish an enlarged senior school from forms I to VI and a junior school from primers to standard 4.

“The board considers that the best method of implementing this is to use the Victory Memorial School in Springfield road. It has, therefore, decided to accept the offer of the Diocese of Christchurch of the Victory Memorial School. “The inclusion of the Victory complex of buildings in the college’s life will be phased over a period of years. During 1967 the junior school will not be disturbed. In 1968 it is anticipated that some specialist classes of the senior school and the primers will be located at Victory Memo ial.

“Thereafter, there will be a gradual establishment of the primary school up to standard 4 at Victory Memorial School over a period of years.

“The Trust Board is satisfied that the foregoing arrangements are in the best interests of both the senior and junior schools of the college.

“This extra accommodation will enable the college to enrol more pupils in the senior school, thus permitting a better streaming of classes, better shaping of the educational programme, and more economical running of the college.”
