Leaving Chair

The British Labour firebrand, Mr Emanuel Shinwel), aged 82, yesterday confirmed that he wants to leave the chairmanship of the Parliamentary party. Mr Shinwell announced his [plans to a private meeting of the party but at the same time called on members to “sustain” the Labour Governj ment in office. But he swept aside pleas from members to retain his post. The resignation will not become official until it has been handed to the party’s secretary and confirmed by the liaison committee. After the announcement today, the Prime Minister. Mr Harold Wilson, paid tribute to Mr Shinwell’s service. Mr Shinwell is expected to remain in office until the end of the month, when Parliament rises for the Easter recess.
Bonds Plan.—West Germany has announced that it is planning to buy 500 million dollars’ worth of United States Government bonds during the year beginning July 1 to help offset the cost of keeping American troops in Germany.—Bonn, March 16.
