March 4. THE LATE MURDER.—lnformation reached Christchurch on Saturday that the fifteen Chinese who are supposed to have committed the murder at Porter’s Pass had all been apprehended at Oamaru. They have been taken before the Resident Magistrate, and remanded.

BURGLARY.—We have received our files to the Ist instant. The following information is extracted from the Westland newspapers:— The “Evening Star,” of the 28th ultimo states that on Wednesday night or Thursday morning a most impudent and barefaced robbery was committed at the ham and beef shop of Mr Millbanke, next door to the Cafe National, in Revell street, and as the miscreants who did the deed have left no traces behind them, we presume they will not easily be discovered. It appears that last night at about twelve o’clock the shop was fastened and left as it was thought secure, but this morning the manager was surprised to find that the door had been burst open, and that

some person or persons unknown had been making free with the choice edibles inside. It is probable that more than one person was concerned in the robbery for upwards of £1 worth of the delicious articles of food with which the shop is ordinarily supplied had been abstracted. Sausages, both savloy and polony had been taken away wholesale, and two or three pies of that peculiar description known as Melton Mowbrays were also missing; and to crown all a choice ham, which on the previous day was uncut, and had been a great attraction to passers by, was shorn of more than half its weight and beauty. It was no wonder the manager stood aghast at the havoc which had been made, but he soon recovered himself, and has determined in future to lock up his tempting wares more securely. The police by this time are on the scent, but as the booty has probably been since consumed by the hungry villians who carried it off, there is not much likelihood of tracing the crime to its source.
