Christ’s College Gains First Innings Win

Christ's College won Its annual match against Christchurch Boys’ High School on the first innings, by 56 runs, when the game ended at the college grounds yesterday. By Its win, Christ’s College avoided relegation from the A grade.

College made 343 on Tuesday, and School, continuing yesterday, was all out for 289. The left-handers, H. Joseph and P. Cook, began slowly for school from the overnight total of one wicket for 17. and took the total to 59 before the righthand medium-pacer, H. Munro, dismissed Cook. It was not until the last over before lunch that School lost another wicket, when Joseph played a rash shot and was well caught by Morten for 61. This was the turning point of the School innings. Joseph had not looked to be in any trouble, and he played a patient, thoughtfull innings, which included seven fours in 152 minutes. Between lunch and tea the School middle order batting fell away and at tea the total was 200 for seven. The prospect of the School gaining a first Innings win looked dim until R. Jones was joined by R. Hadlee. They took the total from 228 to 282, both batting confidently. However, the dismissal of Jones for 49 ended the School’s last faint hopes and the match finished at 5.10 p.m. when D. Phllllpson, attempting a big

hit, 'was bowled. Hadlee was left 36 not out. CHRIST S COLLEGE First innings ..343 CHRISTCHURCH B.H.S. First Innings (1/17) H. Joseph, c Morten, b Copeland .. ..61 P. Cook, b Munro .. 25 J.
