LINWOOD CLEAR WINNER

Linwood I had little difficulty beating Selwyn I, 9 matches to 3, to win its second successive summer table tennis championship when the final round of the competition was played last evening. The leading Linwood player, G. W. Makinson, won his three singles matches in straight sets. He beat the leading individual points leader, H. P. Holt (Selwyn I), 21-10, 21-14.

I. Urquhart (Linwood I) played some brilliant retrieving shots in beating Mrs T. May and Miss V. E. Braumann in straight sets. On occasions his opponents smashed seemingly impossible shots, but Urquhart always seemed to get a racket to the ball. ..He usually returned so well that it upset the rhythm of the two women. . This win by Linwood I placed it two points ahead of the second team, Hoon Hay, which had a comfortable win over the last team, St. John’s. Selwyn I was third, two points behind Hoon Hay. • Dallington beat Wallabies Green by 16 games to 15 after they had been equal, six matches each. The last match between Mrs J. Prisk (Wallabies Green) and P. J. Wylie (Dallington) decided the contest for Dallington. Mrs Prisk needed to win in straight sets to give her team the match. Clever placements and good hitting won Wylie the first

game, but Mra Prlsk’s tight defensive play enabled her to win the next, 21-18. Wylie bit well in the last game to win the vital match and place Dallington fourth in the competition. Linwood II beat Avoneide by default. The junior, J. Weir, was not available because of an injured foot, so Avonside defaulted.
