MONKEY IN SPACE
French Test In Sahara (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copy right) PARIS, March 15. France has successfully launched its second space monkey from the test base at Hammaguir in the Algerian Sahara, the National Space Research Centre announced in Paris yesterday. A Vesta rocket carried the monkey to a height of 150 miles on Monday morning while instruments recorded the animal’s reactions and measured electrical activity in parts of its brain. The first monkey sent into space by France was launched on March 7.
Gallows Destroyed. Gallows at all British prisons except one have been destroyed under the 1964 law abolishing hanging. Miss Alice Bacon, Minister of State at the Home Office, has told the House of Commons. She added that the death penalty remained for treason, arson in Royal dockyards and "piracy with violence.” London, March 15.
