Nb Support For Milk Stoppage

Canterbury milk vendors would not support any strike over the requests for increased margins for vendors, the president of the Canterbury Milk Vendors’ Association (Mr P. A. Caithness) said yesterday.

Commenting on the decision of Auckland milk vendors to support any call for a nation-wide, one-day stoppage of milk, Mr Caithness said the question of margins was serious, but Canterbury vendors would not penalise the consumers because vendors were not satisfied with their lot. A meeting of vendors had considered the matter before Christmas and the decision not to support any strike action was unanimous, Mr Caithness said. The meeting in Auckland, which voted to send the Dominion Federation of Milk Vendors a resolution supporting a stoppage and naming May 1 as the date, rejected by a narrow margin, a resolution calling all New Zealand vendors to adopt a six-day working week. Canterbury vendors had looked at the question of a six-day week several years ago, and he expected it would eventually come, Mr Caith-

ness said. He doubted if such a move would provoke much opposition from the public. Some consumers had even asked why vendors did not observe a six-day week. The meeting of the Auckland Metropolitan Milk Vendors’ Association also rejected a suggestion that the price of milk be raised to 6d a pint. The meeting was called to discuss increased margins for vendors, who, on February 15, were granted an extra 5-8 d a gallon after they had claimed an extra 6d a gallon. Since then vendors’ associations have met. and a deputation has waited on the Minister of Agriculture (Mr Taiboys).
