High Standard At Early Autumn Flower Show

Increased entries and a high over-all standard were the features of the early autumn show of the Canterbury Horticultural Society, which opened in the society’s hall yesterday. Judges commented on the increased interest in many sections and said entrants were choosing types of blooms which were more suitable for home growing than in the past.. The outstanding feature of the show was the exhibition of 4000 chrysanthemums including 75 varieties which were given by Mr L. Clark, a committee member of the society. The exhibition was a pergola with hanging baskets above pedestals of triangular arrangements of chrysanthemums. Included in the display was a large collection of early dwarf pompon chrysanthemums 16 varieties being on display. The champion blue ribbon award went to A. H. McEwan, with a reflex exhibition chrysanthemum Glisten. He also won the premier award with an incurving exhibition chrysanthemum Ethol Edmonds. The blue ribbon for the most outstanding decorative exhibit went to Mrs R. L. Lindsay with an exhibit in the copper glow section featuring Brenda Talbot chrysanthemums. Miss D. L. Hooper won the blue ribbon for the most outstanding exhibit in the modern line section. Other awards were:— Cooper Trophy (most meritorious exhibit in cut flowers), W. A. Hayes; Silver Gilt Medal, L. Clark; Award of Merit, Leeston Nurseries. Entries, with the entries for the 1966 early autumn show given in parenthesis are:— Chrysanthemums 110 (16): dahlias 166 (162); garden clubs 31 (29); cut flowers 167 (181); pot plants 30 (25); decorative 78 (109); vegetables and fruit 119 (156); total 701 (653). Judges Comments The judge of the chrysanthemum section (Mr L. Clark) said that it was pleasing to see the increase in the number of exhibits of early flowering chrysanthemums and said that competitors were staging their exhibits better than in the past He noted that exhibitors were choosing a better type of bloom for home growing than in previous years. The quality of the fruit and vegetable exhibits was very good, the judges of the section (Mr R. E. Yates and Mr W. Brandenburg) said. They felt however that competitors had scrubbed the vegetables too much and bad not kept enough of the natural bloom. They also said that in some cases the fruit had been polished to excess. Mr R. A. Proctor, one of the judges of the cut flowers section, said that although the exhibits had suffered a little from bad weather the standard was good. He said it was a shame to see that the benches in this section were not as full as usual. Results Results were:—
