Biggest U.S. Raid Since November
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) SAIGON, Mar. 13. United States fighterbombers mounted the heaviest strikes in four months against North Vietnam yesterday, concentrating the heaviest raids on an electric power centre near Hanoi.
Taking advantage of breaks in the weather, the Thailandbased jets dropped tons of bombs on the Viet Tri power complex, sending black and brown smoke to 3000 feet, visible in Hanoi 32 miles away.
Although Hanoi Radio claimed that U.S. jets hit the capital itself, a U.S. spokesman said that the Viet Tri
strike was the only one in the Hanoi area. Apart from hitting the power complex, American flyers struck only at anti-air-craft positions in the immediate area, the spokesman said. Not since November 8 have so many U.S. planes pounded the North. The spokesman said that 128 missions were flown—which meant that possibly 400 planes took part in the day’s raids.
R.S.A. Nominations.—Mr H. Mitchell, the national president of the Returned Services' Association, was nominated for the same office in the coming year by the executive bf the Christchurch Returned Services’ Association on Monday evening. It also nominated the vicepresident, Mr T. A. Turner, to retain his present office.
