CHARGE OF MURDER

Jury To Stay Together The jury in a forthcoming murder trial in the Supreme Court at Christchurch will be kept together, and accommodated overnight at a hotel, by order of Mr Justice Macarthur, The man to stand trial, William Arthur John Gilchrist, aged 18, has been charged with murder as a result of the death of another youth in an alleged gang shooting incident at a house in Halswell road on December 28 last

His trial, which begins on April 10, is expected to last three days. The keeping together of juries in murder trials is no longer obligatory, but discretionary upon the order of the presiding judge.

As both the Crown and the defence had in Gilchrist’s case applied to have the jury kept apart, Mr Justice Macarthur had made such an order in advance, said the Supreme Court registrar (Mr J. L. W. Gerken) yesterday. Steady progress is being made in the trial of a record number of criminal indictments in the present Supreme Court session. So far, 16 of the 19 cases set down for hearing in the four weeks to March 3 have been tried, juries returning verdicts of guilty against 12 of the 16 accused. There have been 16 further criminal indictments set down for trial in the four weeks from April 3.
