BRIGHT HIGHLAND WINS HEAT

Tobias Blocked In Final Furlong

The New Brighton Cup winner, Bright Highland, came to the fore among prospects in the £5OOO Easter Cup Final on Saturday week when she won the First Heat last evening. She made all the pace and fought back gamely when challenged.

The hot favourite, Tobias, was very unlucky in fourth place after failing to work clear in the final furlong.

Doug’s Choice broke and checked Master Alan at the start. Chequer Board tangled away and J. A. Carmichael almost had him balanced when Medico collided with him and with Phillmark. Bright Highland was quickly clear of Humphrey and Admire, with Spry and Happy Songster next, and Tobias inside Grande Garnison. Cuddle Doon was the only other with any chance. There was little change racing to the straight, except that Tobias had worked off the rails, only to be blocked behind Humphrey. J. Butcher, the driver of Tobias, made strenuous efforts to work clear but Humphrey

and others kept him well and truly hemmed in. Bright Highland finished strongly for W. R. Butt and won handily by half a head. Admire came home strongly for second after receiving a beautiful run. Spry, after covering extra ground, showed great courage to hold on for third, just ahead of Tobias. Cuddle Doon. was only a length back fifth after making ground from the home turn. Humphrey and Happy Songster were close, clear of Grande Garnison, with the others down the track. £490 Double Raven Song caused a major upset when he won the second heat of the Easter Cup

after leading almost from end to end. He was one of the outsiders of the field and paid £35 13s 6d for a win. The Bright Highland-Raven Song double paid £490 2s for £l. Raven Song was well clear most of the way and he was not seriously tested in the run home, winning by four lengths. Fielder was never far away and he ran on well for second, ahead of Great Adios, which gained many lengths over the last furlong after appearing to be well beaten at the two furlongs, when he was back with Lordship. Adorato battled on for fourth, ahead of Wendy Dawn, which made a forward showing, Dr. Barry, Lordship, which tangled for a few strides at the start, Lyndhurst and Buchanan. Buchanan, Happy Ending, which was pulled up, and Allakasan lost ground at the start.
