AID FOR FIRE VICTIMS
High Commissioner Thanks Donors The Australian High Commissioner, Mr D. W. McNicol, on Monday expressed the deep appreciation of the Australian Government and people for the warm and generous way in which, quite apart from the generous donation of the New Zealand Government, individual New Zealanders from all walks of life had contributed to help the victims of the recent tragic bushfires in Hobart. So far about £l3OO had been received by the High Commissioner’s office and the national headquarters of the Red Cross. Other donations had, of course, been remitted independently. Many touching gestures had come from school children, including one from a group of children who had raised money by holding a small fete. The High Commissioner said that the response was indicative of the genuine spirit of neighbourliness and comradeship that existed between New Zealanders and Australians.
