RACING Riccarton Newcomer In Fast Sprint

Soncerai, a newcomer in D. J. Thistoll’s stable, sprinted brilliantly in training at Riccarton yesterday. Her next start will be in the Alford Hack Handicap at Ashburton next Monday.

Soncerai, which won on the second day of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s summer meeting and has failed since at Motukarara, sped from the half-mile on the trial grass in 47 3-5. She was ridden by the apprentice, R. Murphy, and went through with her run strongly.

Another impressive sprint tnalist yesterday was the two-vear-old Billy Joe. His 48 3-5 sec for half a mile in the . hands of F. H. Skelton height- • ened interest in the Lauriston - Two-year-old Handicap at Ash- ' burton. Talic (G. W. Mein), usually a good track galloper, sprinted with Billy Joe, but was overshadowed by his younj stablemate. Manana (A. J. Stokes) and Hushaway (B. Collins) also recorded 48 3-ssec. Manana, one of Riccarton’s ; biggest winners this season, ; thrived while away from rac- ■ ing during the summer, and he will be ar interesting fresh runner in the Great Easter Handicap. Messmaid (D. Tucker) and Magic Way (G. Gullery) sprinted their half-mile on terms in 48 3-ssec. They are| being prepared for Easter < racing at Riccarton. IMPROVER Gingerbread (W. H. Beck) ran a mile in Imin 46 2-ssec, the last half in 51 l-ssec, as part of her preparation for the Caltex Gold Cup at Ashburton. Gingerbread has improved with each race lately. Warm Up (A. H. Eastwood) led White Rajah (A. Telfer) by a length, with Cumberland (B. S. Finlayson) close up after running seven furlongs in Imin 30 l-ssec, the last four in 49 4-ssec. Warm Up slipped away to a longer lead early in the run home, and White Rajah was shaken up to get as close as he did. Pretentious (D. J. Thistoll)

and Cosmetic (R. K. Moir) sped from the six furlongs clear of Aconite (R. Murphy) in Imin 15 l-ssec, the last three taking 38 4-ssec. New Mint (D. Tucker) and Gold Wood (A. J. Stokes) recorded Imin 20 3-ssec, finishing clear of Displease (R. Murphy), which joined for the last five furlongs. Displease is a two-year-old Dogger Bank —Offend filly being trained by D. J. Thistoll for Mr D. F. Dailey. Sirtax (A. Reuben) and Submerge (D. Tucker) started at the seven furlongs and ran from the half-mile in 51 2-5 sec.

THRIVING Sirtax has thrived since his close second to Hayman at Motukarara and should take beating in the Barford Hack Handicap at Ashburton. May Wyne (G. Gullery) was shading Pickawyn (F. H. Skelton) finishing half a mile in 49sec. May Wyne is a good galloper on easy tracks, and may take beating in the Improvers’ Handicap at Ashburton if conditions suit her. Waitohi (Gullery) and Milllie Small (Tucker) recorded 50 4-ssec for half a mile. Supreme Courage (B. Collins), a newcomer in the Williams stable at Belfast, followed in 51 l-ssec. The two-year-olds Marope (A. H. Eastwood) and Conway Stewart (Mein) shaped well in their half-mile, recording 49 l-ssec. Marope looked very promising when placed at the C.J.C. summer meeting last month. The stablemates Sleeky Fox

and We’ll Find Out ran their half-mile in 51 3-ssec. Kalimera and Seminole followed in 52 3-ssec. Pharasal (A. J. Stokes) ran from the three furlongs in 38 4-ssec. He was tangled by the heavy track in the Thompson Handicap at Trentham on Saturday, but will be a lightweight chance in the Hutt Handicap this week if the footing is firm.
