Six Transformers Needed
The Central Canterbury Electric Power Board will buy six new transformers this year to meet estimated future demands in its area. On the recommendation of the engineer-manager (Mr S. E. Slat ter) the board decided yesterday to call tenders for four 7.5 MVA transformers for use at Brookside, Harewood, Middleton and Hornby. Two 2.5 MVA units will be sought for Duvauchelle and the Alloy Steel Company. Mr Slatter said two of the large transformers and one of the small ones should be available before the winter of 1968 and the rest over a period of two years. He said two 7.5 MVA transformers now on order were expected to arrive next July.
At the Sockburn substation the second 11,000 volt switchboard had been fully assembled and tested. The board could now proceed with the short 11.000 volt cable runs in the switch yard and join the last section of cable in the Main South road. Preparatory alterations to the overhead lines at Sockburn were now in progress and the second stage in the sub-station development could soon be brought into service. Mr Slatter said present tests indicated that the first
bank would carry a load of more than 80 per cent of its capacity next winter. At the Hornby substation lines staff had installed 3000 yards of 11,000 volt underground cable and the switchyard was almost complete. The switchboard had been assembled and only needed testing and instrumentation.
