Anzac Hymn Tune
For almost 15 minutes on Monday evening the executive of the Christchurch Returned Services’ Association turned its attention to music. A member, Mr T. J. KirkBurnnand, sought to “put a bit of life” into the music used for a hymn at the Anzac Day .citizens’ service. His request wa s that the tune by Hopkins be used for the Anzac hymn “O Valiant Heart,” rather than the tune “Eventide” which, he said “was pretty dismal.” Mr Kirk-Burnnand said “Eventide” had been “hammered out of all the churches” and even his good friend, Mr C. Foster Browne, played the Hopkins tune in the Cathedral. After interjections about the suitability of either tune for electric guitars it was left to Mr Kirk-Burnnand to resolve the matter with tha band conductor.
After the meeting the Anzac service programmes for the last six years were checked and “O Valiant Heart” wai not sung in that period. Mr Kirk-Burnnand apolo gised for raising the matter.
